Honestly speaking, I know there's a lot, we developers and engineers can do but I have never imagined myself putting up a somewhat complete solutions in less than 24 hours.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Last December, I joined the RE:Hack - Smart Living 24 hour Hackathon, an event organized by TM with my 2 other colleagues. All these years in the industry, I was apathy towards development beyond my job roles or anything that brings no ROI to the company I worked for but since hackathon is widely talked about in M2, I went ahead and joined the crowd.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the past, I kept giving excuse to myself saying that I have done enough coding during office hour and should not spend any more on my free time devoting to coding but through this event I learnt that I was wrong. Occasional hack is fun. I can write code and not have to worry too much about adhering to specific coding standard, code readability, redundancy and performance as they are intended to be a quick solution or prototype to begin with. It gave so much sense of accomplishments in such a short time. It just felt so good.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
No doubt, it was taxing physically to join such an event but it is definitely worth it once in a blue moon. Through this event, I managed to put C# to use for the 1st time after more than a decade in C and C++ side of the world. It was satisfying when we even brought home the 2nd prize and being promised a project by TM.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I can't wait to learn about the project.<br />

I was scanning over my past posts and decided I need to write this one like how I did in my past positions.<br />
<br />
So I just past my 6 months probation in 'M2'. Even before the review session, I knew clearly that I would get over it without any problem looking at my involvement and deliverable so far.<br />
<br />
As expected, nothing shocking from my manager. However I was shocked over my own honest remarks during the review session which includes a good mix of good and bad remarks like<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><ul>
<li>Yes! Learning curve is steep. </li>
<li>Very different from my previous positions.</li>
<li>I like the challenges.</li>
<li>Still a lot for me to learn.</li>
<li>No! I don't see career here.</li>
<li>It's a present job.</li>
<li>No one I can look up to.</li>
<li>Lacked of accessible mentors, seniors and architects within the organization.</li>
</ul>
<br />
My manager could only suggest that I get in touch with those in HQ but I personally doubt it is possible to get a mentor when there is no personal touch. These folks that he was referring to are TEN THOUSANDS km away from me. We have not met in person nor have any casual conversation before. I am also aware that as I grow in my career, this tends to get harder to achieve.<br />
<br />
I can only hope that as time past, I will get to know them better and build the rapport and trust like I have with my past seniors and mentors.<br />
<br />
Let me be the 'Innovators you can count on'!<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
When I first discovered about this phone, I was reluctant to own one as my previous, Google Nexus 5 was only half the price tag and was working perfectly and in fact way better than many other. However after giving it a thorough comparison between the successor version, Nexus 6 and P9, I am in favour of the P9. Both are manufactured by Huawei and carries premium specifications with 1 or 2 items which I can criticize on.<br />

I chose this session over 2 other sessions because I have always been very bad at street or crowd photographing. So my take away from this workshop is that street photographing emphasizes on using clear lines, patterns and shapes to frame the subject or people on the street. It is about having the patience to prepare your frame and wait for the correct moment for the subject to be where you intended it for. So here is some of the shots taken on that day.<br />

And we also have a little competition among the participants of the workshop to each submit 1 best shot taken during the workshop and 3 best photos will be rewarded. As expected many are puzzled with my move. After close to 8 years in the industry, I move down to Kuala Lumpur, out of Penang where I call home.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
3D printing technology in which Materialise is in an interesting arena. I have never thought to be involved in any way. So I started googling it out after I heard from the headhunter and seriously I am impressed.<br />
<br />
Honestly other than that, I don't have strong reason to move. Probably I was just afraid of staying stagnant. Work was rather comfortable and generally semiconductor<br />
industry is calm. I always believe in the calm before the storm. So I rather prepare and equip myself with knowledge and skill and stay competent in the industry.<br />
<br />
Now 1 month here in Materialise, I am happy with this move. I have to admit that I am not technically competent but I believe I will be there soon. Everything used and how things are done are completely different.<br />
<br />
From embedded firmware to MFC application, google to Microsoft office environment, Git to TFS version control, Unix(command line heavy) to nice Visual Studio IDE development, CPPUtest to Microsoft UnitTesting Framework.<br />
<br />
Anyway I would not know my lack being if not for this move. So technically it is challenging and rewarding at the same time.<br />

Btw, heard of Intel having mass layoff? Would it be this hard/easy to move to new company if I have never left Intel all this while? I doubt!<br />

*Anyway this is my current thinking thought and I intend to capture this moment like those post reminding me of happy moments in Intel and Motorola Solutions.<br />

May and I traveled to Australia from 10 May to 24 May 2015. We are glad and grateful to have each others companies in this new world.<br />

<div>
10 May - We have traveled for close to a day with a layover in Kuala Lumpur with AirAsia. Our flight was pretty smooth and the landing was perfect. We landed in Melbourne Tullamarine International Airport slightly close to 1 hour ahead of schedule. The airport was really busy with passages from multiple flight clearing the immigration together with us.</div>
<div>
After we cleared off, we went straight to the Redspot pickup center situated right opposite the terminal. There was much surprise at the counter as we have already prebooked our car in advance with 0 liability insurance package.<br />
After picking up our car, we decided to head straight to Great Ocean Road. We stopped by the Geelong and Great Ocean Road Visitor Information Center at Little River along Princess Highway as advised by the Redspot's staff and this was the beginning of our adventurous and fun trip.<br />

We didn't know what to expect until we finally discovery a large mob of kangaroos. There were approximately 15 to 20 of them grazing grass in the club compound.<br />

I have stopped adding entries here on my travel experience for years. Few years back I stumbled into <a href="http://www.backpackmojo.com/">www.backpackmojo.com</a> and find it cool since they promise to provide a hard-copy free to the its author. So then I decided to document my travel experience there.<br />
When I wrote my first travel guide covering Laos, I was disappointed with all the restriction they have imposed in place like number of characters in each fields, currency quote, photo orientation and lousy Bing as the map provider.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Anyway I continued just because I was really anticipating my first hard-copy books. Finally when I published the book, I didn't get the book. They seem to have a T&C which says hard-copy books would only provided when it is more than 40 pages. In normal circumstances, 40 pages doesn't seem hard but with all the restriction in place, it was real tough. I have no choice but to settle with an unsatisfying soft-copy.<br />
<br />
<div>
Then on my next travel, I gave it a try again. I did some rough entry to check if I would be able to fulfill the requirement and sad to see that it was much closer to the limit but still unable to reach that. So with all the disappointment, I just dropped the idea of publishing a guide book on Japan.</div>
<div>
<br />
I have not written any travel articles for years. I am committed to write one and publish here.</div>

Life sucks recently. It's either I am doing some shitty no value work or I am forced to deliver on tight schedule with all its dependency still in black box mode. Wonder which programmer can write effective code is she doesn't know what it is really used for.<br />
<div>
On top of the usual task, I am overloaded with initiatives. As usual, the reward for good job is more job. :-( Hopefully my recent 'NO's or no show do not offend those haunting souls out there. Please spare me from more work. I don't get paid overtime and I am not calculative either. I just have already devoted more than 10 hours per day in office and I need some for myself.</div>

I always prefer my photos in hardcopy as compared to softcopy. They just give me the thought of being physically attached with the past. The past is what made me today. I treasure them dearly. So I used to develop on average of 40 to 100 photos for a 7 days trip. With this limit, I could only develop selective ones and especially those with me in them.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div>
Now, I no longer have to refrained myself from printing 100 photos. No worry about printing those with plain grass, flowers and everything I see. I frame everything I see thru my lenses, then I can actually get them printed. Printing cost and quality has improved drastically over the years. Photobook printing is not new any more. Ever since my 1st photobook backed in year 2010 (thanks to those great voucher deals!), I have printed a few for myself and my family members.<br />
Best now when Photobook worldwide group actually give free 6'x6' photobooks occasionally. I can easily crunch some photos and made a book for some short events. I am more than willing to pay for those larger ones at discounted price for those rare events.<br />
Back on the review, I have tried different printers in the past, including Photobook Malaysia, Photobookmart and another which I could not recall its name. The service that Photobook Malaysia is of the top notch. Not only they provide free photobook, the printing and finishing quality is good. Packaging is excellent. You can rest assure that you will get your photobook within 7 days and nicely packed in layers of strapped hard board box on the outer layer and inside is your photobook wrapped in plastic.<br />
They also provide free application for its' user and it comes with many free templates (mostly for larger size ones). The application is easy to used however there are still space for improvement. The auto populate or auto flow is not helpful. It only filled photos into photo placeholder. So to use it make sure you have the intended layout fixed up first.<br />
I have difficulty getting the provided layout template and background on certain project. I think what ever I could get was what they have offered at the time my project was created. As I used to make my own project templates and copy over them in multiple project, I ended up with old preloaded template and background.<br />
...to be continued</div>

But with the over spent incurred from recent trips, my senses just got blunt. I was charged RM165 for annual membership on my CTB credit card on July and I am only aware today in October. I'm going to cut this lousy card for making me call them annually to get the fee waived. Nowadays many Bank is offering free for life, so make sure you get one of such or else expect to pay fees which may end up higher than your entitled cash back saving.szewan62http://www.blogger.com/profile/01741843728512109668noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8306641274757848748.post-47191730907841479242013-07-24T16:19:00.000+08:002013-07-24T16:19:08.373+08:00We are human after allI am writing this article on my bus ride to airport from JR Sapporo station. I was supposed to catch the 5.15pm train but somehow, there was an urge to leave early. Thank god I did. Else I am sure to miss my flight completely.<br />
For the past days, Japanese have repeatedly impressed me on how structural and well planned their public transport can be. It always depart on time and arrive as plan with couple minutes buffer.<br />
It was near perfect until this accident that obstruct my way. Be it Japanese or Malaysia, we are human after all. We are all subject to mistake. I just hope that no one is injured today and I can arrive on time for my flight.szewan62http://www.blogger.com/profile/01741843728512109668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8306641274757848748.post-19820774174225295132013-07-18T15:10:00.001+08:002013-07-24T17:40:36.466+08:00Solo Travel in JapanAfter 8 years since my first and last solo travel, I finally set out alone again. This time I am in Japan. This experience is completely different from backpacking with companion though at most of the time, I was the one responsible of making the plan and itinerary. Travelling alone gives me much flexibility as well as more worries. Worry that I would end up in an unknown place especially middle in the night. I have slept in couple of airports world wide and so, was convinced that a night in Haneda would not be too bad.<br />
Despite knowing this, I left the airport near midnight, hoping to catch the last train. The moment I board the train, I regretted my act. It was a mistake. Riding train in Japan is extremely hard especially I can't speak or read their language. Finding people that understand me at this hour was tough. Anyhow, I managed to catch the last train to my intended station.<br />
Second problem was finding my way to Junko's house. My second mistake was for not asking her for direction or map to her place. So I got out on the totally opposite exit. Then my 3rd mistake surfaced. I only have her address. I didn't even have her phone number. Without internet connection, the address was close to useless for me and I can't get in touch immediately with her.<br />
I was lucky to meet a kind passer-by who helped to search out on his mobile and tried to explain the way in Japanese. After few attempt, he agreed to guide me to the address. It was close to 1am and my destination as about 10minutes from where we were. Great that I met him. After making conversation, I finally learn that he is a student from China...so we both have common language after all.<br />
Thank god that I finally reached Junko's house after 1am. This was a memorable experience. I'm looking forward to the rest of my stay her in Japan.<br />

<br />
So hell yes, I will be completing my 2 years in Motorola soon. These are real busy and intensive years. The learning curve are steep and work are demanding...or at least I have been committing myself to this busy schedule....this is just me! "If not now, then when?" attitude.<br />
<br />
However glad that things have been very fruitful. My projects are in good shapes and my trip was an enjoyable one. Meeting people and learning from each other always amazed me. Hope to get more of such opportunity :Dszewan62http://www.blogger.com/profile/01741843728512109668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8306641274757848748.post-20680895783326723442013-01-03T16:48:00.001+08:002013-01-03T16:48:36.993+08:00Grew to love booksUnconsciously over the years, I grew to love books so dearly...I just love reading random books and articles. I am fascinated with new knowledge, experiences and theories. Recently I find behavioural, religious and management are among the few that got my interest.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
These are the 2 which I read while killing some time in mall waiting for friends and family.</div>

This is based on my 2 years postgraduate program in MMU.<br />
<br />
Learning is a life long journey. Learning is a self driven activities and it is by far the best experience I have. Formal education is just another channel to learn but doesn't simply mean once you signed up on formal education, you would learn. I am not the kind that remember notes and books by word. I just read, grasped and improvised the content. However not everyone has the same intention. Some were only after the scroll and the fame. So if you are the later one, please do not take up a technical postgraduate. You will suffer badly in ensuring the delivery of your assignments, tests and thesis. You do not have the excuse to cheat. Your act do bothers me not because your result. It is because you may portrait my course wrongly to the external. Lucky you, that I am a 'mind my own business' person. So wishing you all the best in your future endeavour!<br />
<br />
The major different between my undergraduate and postgraduate is the openness and equality we have. None was being discriminated. We are all the same in the eyes of lecturers. Bravo!<br />
<br />
Finally, I would conclude saying that postgraduate on part time basis is not for everyone. Surely not for those like mentioned above and not for those lack of determination and passion. It really exhausted me to the max throughout the period. I salute those who have made it through honourably before me.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />szewan62http://www.blogger.com/profile/01741843728512109668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8306641274757848748.post-8074556892453530222012-10-08T16:37:00.000+08:002012-10-08T16:39:02.648+08:00Another milestoneBeing a goal oriented person really drives me far. Every time I set out for something, I always get it. Getting it after efforts made and attentions paid, certainly not through the wrong or forcefully methods.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So my recent accomplishment and milestone is receiving my postgraduate degree. It has been real hard for the past 2 years. Coping with new office is nothing close to easy. It is really exhausting after the countless extra hours in office.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thankfully it has finally comes to an end!</div>

It will be my 10th beginning from next week. It has been challenging months for me as well as fulfilling ones. This is what I have signed up for.
I appreciate the learning initiative they have put in place...another good example of "Leaders breed leaders". We will move forward cumulatively. Go APCO!

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I just finish cleaning up my blog. The template is really old and those links are long gone. From the initial slightly over a hundred, they are now down to less than 30.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As I was reviewing the templates and scanning my past post, I realize my life nowadays are less happening as compared to my early career years. Perhaps, I have grew older and with less excitement in life. I have to find something to cheer it up...what do you suggest?</div>szewan62http://www.blogger.com/profile/01741843728512109668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8306641274757848748.post-10862347893956486522012-02-17T11:09:00.000+08:002012-02-17T11:10:10.514+08:00Time fliesTime flies...this saying is true regardless of easy time or hard. Now I have joined 'M' for more that 6 months yet there are still so much to learn. Still a great part of the development cycle seemed so alien to me. I could not recall having this feeling when I was back in 'I'. I was running at pace with others in the team by then.<br />
<br />
Is it because I lost my focus? Is it because I am now overloaded trying to balance work, study and personal life all together at once? or is it because there are more to learn in embedded field or is it because 'M' is a more process centric organization?<br />
<br />
No matter what it is, I am still eager to continue my path here. I will just need to hang on and overcome all the obstacles. This semester is coming to an end by this Saturday. After that I have only 2 more papers and a thesis to complete in next semester. Hope that I can finish my thesis by mid of this year to be in time for the 13th MMU Convocation. Then I will regain my luxury of time for my beloved activities...travelling, photographing and surfing the internet...My last long holiday abroad was in 2010 and next is in 2013. Missed those days where I have the luxury of 17 days of annual leave per year.szewan62http://www.blogger.com/profile/01741843728512109668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8306641274757848748.post-64176610090259563162011-12-09T13:45:00.001+08:002011-12-09T14:11:33.855+08:00New Platform To Learn And To TeachI am still committed to volunteerism despite in my busy schedule.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In my new working environment, I am still passionate to give back to the community. With this passion and eagerness to learn more, I have volunteered to run the demo for our product in a family day event organized by our employees women council. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was challenging to prepare myself in such a short time to face the public and share with them on our product. I have to know the product in detail yet to put in the simplest manner that was less confusing to the public, especially those kids. We started off with a little dull but quickly adjusted ourselves and finally won the attention of our audiences. It was really satisfying to get positive feedback from them and I am really proud to be part of the organizing team. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There will be another demo tomorrow at the Penang Science Fair at PISA. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Friends, do drop by at the event and especially at Motorola booth to show your support :-)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Volunteers rock!</div>szewan62http://www.blogger.com/profile/01741843728512109668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8306641274757848748.post-83341752128381647352011-11-21T20:50:00.000+08:002011-11-22T15:55:35.072+08:00CheckpointA quick check...this is already my forth month here in M.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My 1st 3 months here has been very challenging for me. I got on a POC project when I knew minimal about the whole development environment. With no background on model development and minimum knowledge on embedded especially in radio communication solution, I have started here in M just like a freshie but with much higher expectation.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To cope with my shortcomings, I stayed back late for over 2 weeks, in office for more than 12 hours daily. This project was equally difficult as my last project in 'I' in terms of the stress induced but both stress induction factors were different. In 'I', it was people relation and politics while in 'M' it was the uncertainty and alien environment that drove me nuts.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was such a relieve and I have so much satisfactory when the project finally completed with lots of positive feedback from the management. It was a great learning opportunity and excellent ramping up path. It opens up my mind on how wide embedded computing can go. Now I can't wait to further my career path in Motorola. There are many opportunities and I am glad to have decided to move on with them.</div>szewan62http://www.blogger.com/profile/01741843728512109668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8306641274757848748.post-49000059720155901422011-09-06T08:13:00.000+08:002011-09-06T08:14:38.378+08:00Life in MIt has been more than a month since I last blogged and it marks my 1 month service in M.<br />
<br />
I am still growing in M. I have a lot to learn here. Everything seems different from my previous position. I find it challenging and believe this position will be able to satisfy my passion for code. Many are asking if M is any better than I, honestly I think each is better in their own way. Every cloud has a silver lining.<br />
<br />
For now, self discovery in new environment has gives a lot of positive qi. Life is better with less complain. I am picking up my pace and making more productive time at work place. With all these +qi, it helps drive progress in my research project as well. :Dszewan62http://www.blogger.com/profile/01741843728512109668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8306641274757848748.post-5120947307654032942011-08-03T19:02:00.004+08:002011-08-03T21:01:20.448+08:003 days in officeWe were out for lunch together today. The 'we' that I meant here was not my new M mates but rather my ex-colleagues from I. It felt strange and irrelevant to hear those office gossips from them but really good to see them around especially in my early integration phase where everything in the day is so alien to me. Thanks mates!<div><br /></div><div>Back about my 3 days experience in new office, I love my new environment. Despite of the smaller cubicle, I am happy to be there. It was a huge relieve on the 1st day knowing that my boss has been anticipating my join. My login account was created weeks ago (confirmed this after seeing whole long list of emails since weeks ago), new monitor (still in box) lying on my table and order has been placed for my new telephone set. I am really looking forward to work with him and the whole team. </div><div><br /></div><div>I am still in setup and learning phase. I am a total 'SpongeBob' now....ready to learn and absorb all new knowledge. Gambate!</div>szewan62http://www.blogger.com/profile/01741843728512109668noreply@blogger.com0
